1 Peter — searchthescriptures @ 10:58 am
We are continuing our study of 1st Peter and find ourselves in chapter 2 today where Peter talks about the makeup of the church. If you are a student of God’s Word, you know that the church as God describes it in the New Testament is not a building but rather a group of believers. But if we draw a metaphor between the body of believers and an actual church building, we find that the foundation for the church is the Lord Jesus Christ…and as we pick up in verse 4 today we find that we, as members of the church, are living stones that make up this spiritual building.

We have been in the 1st chapter of 1st Peter for the past couple of weeks. This epistle offers some great advice for standing firm in difficult times. So far Peter has exhorted us to live holy lives and we’ve seen one way to do that is to be in the Word of God…to search the scriptures as we like to say….another way we are to be holy is to purify our souls. And as Carl picks up at verse 22 today, we find that we are also to have a love for our brothers in Christ.

Have you ever given thought to why we call this program Search the Scriptures….the name comes from the verse in the Acts 17:11 which talks about the Bereans and their diligence at examining the scriptures. Jesus too, said in John 5:39 that a search of the scriptures would testify about him. Scripture, what we today call the Bible, is the most important gift God left us following Jesus’ resurrection. Because God’s Word is inspired by God….it reaches us at every level….wherever our need is. We’ve been in a study of 1st Peter and we find in chapter 1 that Peter calls believers to holiness and as we continue today we find that it is through God’s Word that we can achieve that holiness….Let’s rejoin Carl now as he talks about the importance of coming to terms with the fact that God’s Word is 100% true

As we continue our study on leading a holy life as admonished by the apostle Peter, we take a look today at the present dimension of God’s discipline of his people on earth and the future reward offers in heaven contrasted to the judgment of those who are not saved.

We’ve been looking at the first chapter of the book of first Peter…a wonderful epistle that helps us to stand firm in our faith during trying times. Last time Dr. Broggi began looking at Peter’s call to us to lead holy lives….lives different from the way we lived before salvation. One of the ways we lead holy lives is to bring our minds under submission of the Holy Spirit and that is the message of verse 13 which exhorts us to gird our minds, keep sober and to fix our hope on Christ.

It doesn’t take much persuasion to get people to agree that we live in difficult times…..and so we are blessed to have the words of the apostle Peter to help us get through these days, because his words, particularly his first epistle, help us to stand firm and not to get swept away with every wind of doctrine. One of the challenges of the 21st century Christian is to live a holy life, and as we pick up our study in chapter 1 at verse 13 today Peter offers us words of encouragement toward leading a life that is different from before our salvation.

We have begun a study of the book of 1st Peter….a book whose main theme….standing firm in difficult times, is a worthwhile study for the days in which we live. We find ourselves in verse 11 of chapter 1 which talks about the fact that Jesus was prophesied long before his arrival. Today Carl will show that our salvation through Christ was not only prophesied in the past…but, as born again believers, we are to preach Jesus in the present. Before we begin however, Dr. Broggi talks about the necessity for research as well as the Holy Spirit’s leading as we Search the Scriptures

Aside from the resurrection, what is it that makes Jesus unique in terms of proving that he truly was and is the Son of God? It is fulfilled prophecy. And as we continue our study of 1st Peter we find in the introductory remarks Peter makes in this epistle, reference in verse 10, to the prophecies which foretold of the coming of Christ. As we search the scriptures today we find that the prophets themselves carefully searched God’s Word to authenticate that Jesus really was Messiah. And we find, as we examine scripture, over 300 prophecies pointing to Jesus’ first coming were accurately fulfilled.

We’re in a study of the book of First Peter. This epistle offers great practical advice for Godly living. Last time we concluded our introduction to this letter from the apostle Peter and as we pick up today in verse ten of chapter one we find the incredible amount of prophecy that indisputably points to coming of a Messiah, a savior, who undoubtedly was our Lord Jesus Christ.
